I was surprised and disappointed to see Sen. Susan Collins criticize Donald Trump’s criminal conviction as “political.” She said the prosecutor’s decision to open the investigation was based not on the facts but solely on politics. The jury obviously disagreed.
The senator did not specify any flaws or errors in the trial process that resulted in a grand jury indicting him and a jury of his peers finding him guilty on every single one of the 34 charges. Does Sen. Collins really think it is acceptable for a political candidate to falsify business records to hide evidence of an affair from voters just before an important election? That is a curious position for an elected official. It is particularly disturbing that her concern is for a man who has been found liable (by a different jury) for sexually assaulting a different woman.
