Mary E. Chesley

WINTHROP – Mary E. Chesley, 90, a resident of Winthrop, formerly of Monmouth, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2024, at her home with her loving family by her side. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Boise, Idaho, the daughter of Edward C. Pelkey and Ethel Viola (Merrill) Pelkey. She was a graduate from Monmouth Academy and later received her associate’s degree from UMA in general studies for teaching. On Dec. 20, 1952, in North Monmouth, she married Rodney L. Chesley.

Mary was a teacher’s assistant at the Henry L. Cottrell Elementary School in Monmouth. She also devoted her time as the director and instructor for the summer swim program for Monmouth Parks and Recreation. Mary was a member of the Maine Teachers Association.

She and Rodney enjoyed a trip to Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary. Mary loved cake decorating, swimming, gardening, cats, writing, and being with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney L. Chesley of Winthrop; two sons, Neil Chesley and wife Beth of Winthrop, Bruce Chesley and wife Diana of West Gardiner; four grandchildren, John Chesley, Meagan Dion, Ashley Maker, Randy Pelkey; five great-grandchildren, Michael, Katie, Daniel, Alexander and Haiden; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and a son, Glenn Chesley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 15 at the Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at Monmouth Ridge Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Monmouth.
