EUSTIS — A crane was destroyed Wednesday afternoon after it caught fire at Stratton Lumber on Fontaine Road, Courtney Knapp, fire chief of the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department, said Friday.
Eustis Fire Rescue Department was not available to respond to the fire.
Five firefighters from Carrabassett Valley and Rangeley responded to the scene along with four fire trucks to help extinguish the fire.
It is an older crane on wheels that hauls a log trailer. The crane picks up logs and brings them back to the facility, Knapp said.
The cause is undetermined.
When equipment is hot and it is hot outside, and given it is an older piece of equipment, a hydraulic line could have burst and caught the machine on fire, Knapp said. It is not uncommon for that to happen, he added.
