Thank you for printing Lynne Roy’s guest editorial, “Support of Trump leaves me stumped,” (June 29). It summed up things that have stumped me since he came on the political scene. How can people with multiple scholastic, business, social and family accomplishments fall for his braggadocio and give him a pass on all his lies and false faces? How can religious people fall for his fake Bible thumping but not see his true personality?
My only answer is that people are too busy, uninformed or disinterested to pay attention to news beyond the sports pages, or to do their own fact-checking, unless they have something to gain by his actions. They find his simplistic solutions to made-up problems correct because he has the loudest, most repeated, most enthusiastic delivery. They believe he must therefore be the wisest, most honest and capable leader around and anything said to the contrary is a dastardly attack on their idol.
As for Biden’s seeming confusion in the debate, he had to sift through all the facts on all issues to provide useful answers. Trump only needed to forcefully reiterate his oft-told lies and avoid direct answers to most questions. As Biden later said, he could not recall a fully truthful statement Trump made in the whole debate.
Keep up the good work. (And remind readers that Fox and OANN do not have a corner on, or even an interest in the truth.)

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
