
SKOWHEGAN – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joanne G. Hewett, who peacefully departed this world on July 23, 2024, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Joanne bravely fought a courageous battle with cancer, and her spirit and strength during this time were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Born on June 21, 1960, Joanne was the daughter of Marjorie (Spencer) and Joseph “Larry” Goulette. Joanne lived a life filled with love, compassion, and dedication. She graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1978 and pursued higher education at the University of Maine, Orono, where she graduated in 1982.
Joanne’s journey was marked by her unwavering commitment to her family, her work, and her community. In 1981, Joanne married Jeffrey Hewett, her steadfast partner and best friend. Together, they built a beautiful life, enriched further in 2003 when they traveled 2,500 miles to Kazakhstan to welcome their beloved son, Shawn, into their family. Joanne’s love for Shawn knew no bounds, and her dedication to him was evident in every aspect of her life.
Joanne was a woman of many talents and worked in various roles throughout her career. Her journey began as the Store Manager for Mr. Paperback, where she worked for 17 years and then as an assistant town clerk for Norridgewock. She also worked at the law office of Merrill, Hyde, Fortier, and Youney, and then at Hi-Tech Software as an administrative assistant. Most recently as an accounting assistant for the Skowhegan Superintendent’s office before her medical leave.
Joanne served on several community boards such as The Bloomfield Trustees, The Redington Memorial Home, as Treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 403, and was a founding member and President of the Lioness.
Being well traveled, Joanne had embarked on trips to Washington DC volunteering for Wreaths Across America. Enjoying family trips to Florida, Quebec, Hawaii, and several surrounding states. Joanne had several hobbies but most notable were gardening, cooking, reading, listening to music and traveling.
Joanne was predeceased by her parents, Joseph “Larry” and Marjorie Goulette of Skowhegan.
She was a devoted daughter and the primary caretaker of her mother until her passing, just five months ago.
She is survived by her husband Jeffrey and son Shawn Hewett of Skowhegan; her siblings Barbara and Peter Blunda of Gorham, Steve and Debbie Goulette of Brewer; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held on August 17 at 11 a.m. on the island in Skowhegan at Tewksbury Hall, located behind the Federated Church. A Graveside service will be held following her celebration at Fairview cemetery in Canaan.
