BENTON — State Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday night on Interstate 95 that killed a man and police say appears to be speed- and alcohol-related.

Jed Carpenter, 41, of Harrington was driving a 2006 Ford Econoline van south on the Kennebec River bridge of I-95 around 9 p.m. when it appears he lost control of the van, which struck the bridge rail according to a statement issued late Monday afternoon by Shannon Moss, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

“Carpenter, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement says.

Police narrowed the interstate to one lane while emergency crews worked to removed Carpenter’s body from the scene. He was the sole occupant, Moss said.

“Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this crash,” her statement says.

Fairfield and Benton Fire-Rescue, Fairfield police, Clinton police and Dostie’s Towing assisted at the scene.

Contacted Monday, Casey Dugas, spokesman for the Fairfield Police Department, referred questions to state police as they were investigating, but said a Fairfield officer responded to the scene.

Fairfield and Benton fire Chief Travis Leary said late Monday afternoon that he had been on vacation and firefighters who responded to the crash were off on Monday but expected to return Tuesday. Leary said he had few details of the incident.
