SKOWHEGAN — A police chase that began early Wednesday in Waterville ended about 30 minutes later in Skowhegan, when the vehicle being pursued crashed, rolled over and hit a home, officials said.
The driver, a minor, faces several charges related to the incident, officials said.
The chase began when a sergeant with the Waterville Police Department attempted to stop a BMW on Silvermount Street in Waterville because it had been reported stolen, Major Jason Longley said.
The incident began at about 1 a.m., according to a city dispatch log.
The BMW did not stop, and Waterville police pursued it through the city, then in Oakland and eventually in Skowhegan, where Skowhegan police assisted, according to Longley and Chief David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department.
Police did not specify how the car had reached Skowhegan, since Oakland does not border the town. Longley said he did not have details Wednesday afternoon of the route the chase had followed.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, which then rolled over and hit a house at 33 West Front Street, at the corner of Alder Street, Bucknam said. The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m., according to the Somerset County emergency dispatch log.
Based on seeing the scene later Wednesday morning, Bucknam said he believed the vehicle was westbound, toward Norridgewock, when it crashed.
“I believe that the driver lost control on that little S-turn,” Bucknam said, adding he did not know if officers had used a spike strip to stop the fleeing vehicle.
Five minors were inside the car, Bucknam said. He and Longley said they were not able to release details about the driver or other occupants because of the youths’ ages.
Police charged the juvenile driver with two counts of criminal restraint and with eluding an officer, operating without a license, theft, aggravated driving to endanger, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, aggravated criminal mischief and criminal speed, Longley said.
A Waterville police log shows the person charged is 17 years old.
The BMW was reported stolen in Gardiner, according to Bucknam. Chief Todd Pilsbury of the Gardiner Police Department confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen in the city Monday night.
Large pieces of debris from the crash, including what appeared to be a wooden fence or porch, were strewn about the lawn Wednesday morning of the building on West Front St., which appears to be a multiunit building.
Across Alder Street, at 29 West Front St., there appeared to be minor damage to a side of the house, and smaller debris was on the ground.
All five people inside the car were treated for injuries, Bucknam said.
Longley said two passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
As of noontime, Bucknam said one of the youths involved in the crash was still at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.
The Skowhegan Fire Department also responded to the crash, according to the county dispatch log.
