HARMONY — A demolition derby, livestock displays, craft exhibits, historical re-enactments, a horse show, talent show, food and live music are among just a few offerings at the Harmony Free Fair, which kicks off Friday.
The 76th annual fair is sponsored by the Harmony Patriarchs Club and charges no fee for admission or parking. Visitors may buy food, however, and a few events require admission fees, including the demolition derby and truck pull.
One of the fair’s new buildings will showcase local farmers and is intended to help educate fairgoers about what it takes to be a farmer now, according to Patriarchs President Jeff Chadbourne. Chadbourne said in a letter on the fair’s website that officials hope the farmers’ presence will encourage people to buy local and often.
Another new building on the fairgrounds is the blacksmith building, where fairgoers may observe the craft, according to Chadbourne. This building was built with logs donated by local residents that were sawed into lumber by local sawmills. Volunteers from the Patriarchs constructed the building.
An activity area will be available for children from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Monday, and will include face painting, felt axe throwing, wooden calf roping, cornhole games, coloring, lawn games and a sandbox, as well as educational opportunities and crafts.
At 6 p.m. Friday, live music by the Friday Night Jammers will be presented on the main stage; also at 6 p.m., a cribbage tournament will be held in the community tent. The truck pulls start at 7 p.m.
On Saturday the main stage will feature music by Thomas Clukey at 9:30 a.m., the youth livestock show opens at 10 a.m., and a live demonstration on how to milk a cow will be at the fiber arts and livestock barn at 11 a.m. Also at 11 a.m., magic will be performed by Wes Wonder on the main stage and music by 3Z Top will be featured at noon on the demolition derby stage. Saturday also will feature a border collie demonstration, egg toss, pie auction, ice cream eating contest, more live music and other activities.
The exhibition hall opens at 10 a.m. Sunday when a farmers auction and draft horse event also will begin. A horseshoe tournament is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., and birdhouse making, frog jumping contest, pig scramble, bookmaking, fly tying, childrens’ arm wrestling and glow stick dance party also will be featured Sunday. Fireworks by Central Maine Pyrotechnics will be sponsored by Harmony Regional Ambulance Service, Patriarchs Club, Town of Harmony and the pyrotechnic company.
