UNITY — A man was arrested after an incident involving a gun at Unity Raceway that prompted a sweeping police response Thursday night, officials confirmed.

It was reported that Joshua Littlefield, 30, of Unity was threatening people with a gun around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

“(The victim) had just been approached and threatened by a man with a gun while at the Unity Raceway,” Moss said in a news release Friday. “The victim provided a description of both the suspect who he was familiar with as well as a description of the firearm used.”

The Maine State Police Tactical and Crisis Negotiation teams were sent to Littlefield’s residence after the incident at the raceway. Traffic along Town Farm Road was closed for several hours as the situation unfolded.

A group of students were told to shelter in place at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association campus adjacent to Town Farm Road.

Students from the Ecology Learning Center, a public charter high school in Unity, were camping near the organization’s headquarters at 294 Crosby Brook Road when police told them to stay in place.

MOFGA Deputy Director Heather Spalding said Friday afternoon that details remained scarce but that the students were safe during and after the incident. A representative for the ELC could not immediately be reached.

Littlefield was ultimately arrested on a charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon as a result of Thursday’s incident, Moss said. He was hospitalized and will be transported to the Waldo County Jail after an evaluation.

An investigation into the situation is ongoing, Moss said. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 207-624-7076.

Waldo County Sheriff Jason Trundy redirected questions to Maine State Police. Moss said she could not provide more details beyond the news release at this time.

It was the second standoff in Unity a few months. In May, another standoff unfolded in town after Sharod D. Parker, 38, allegedly fired a gun at a forest ranger who was investigating a report of illegal tree cutting.

That May incident similarly prompted a response from the state police Crisis Negotiation Team and ended after a roughly three-hour standoff with Parker’s arrest on a charge of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
