Amy B. Washburn

AUGUSTA – Amy B. Washburn, 87, of Glen Street died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, at Glenridge Nursing Home with her loving family by her side.

Amy was born in Weymouth, Mass., on April 19, 1937, the daughter of the late Earl Dingwell and Doris (Mallette) Dingwell. She attended local schools graduating from North Quincy High School where she was Valedictorian, like her mother before her. She continued her education at Gordon College earning her bachelor’s degree.

Amy met the love of her life, Howard Washburn while attending Gordon College and they were married on June 13, in 1959. She celebrated 65 wonderful years with him in June. They passed about a month apart and are now together again.

Amy was a born teacher. She began with music and swimming lessons, then taught nursery school for decades, including serving as Director at the YMCA in Augusta and the Winter Street Baptist Church in Gardiner, and finally ending her career in an elementary school in Pottstown, Pa.

Amy loved her family and friends and treasured her time with them. She enjoyed singing and participated in many church and community choirs and barbershop groups. She loved being outside tending to her flowers and bird watching. She was very artistic and painted several of her favorite nature scenes.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Washburn; her first born son, Lincoln, and daughter-in-law Dodi (Harvey) Washburn.

Amy is survived by her sister, Elma Legge of Thunder Bay, Ontario; three sons, Steven and his wife, Holly Washburn of Rhode Island, Daniel Washburn of Litchfield, Robert and his wife, Amy Washburn of Norridgewock; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

There will be a joint memorial service for Amy and Howard Washburn on Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. The service will be held at the Winthrop Congregational Church, 10 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
