ROME — An 18-year-old woman was seriously injured when the motorcycle she was driving collided with an SUV Friday afternoon, officials said.

The woman wore a helmet when driving the motorcycle from Rome toward Mount Vernon around 1:04 p.m. Near 1008 Watson Pond Road she collided with an SUV with one occupant traveling in the other direction, said Rome Fire & Rescue Chief Gary Foss. It is unknown if the driver of the SUV was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken from the scene of the crash by LifeFlight of Maine and the driver of the SUV was taken by Delta Ambulance.

Foss, who was just leaving the scene at 3:30 p.m., did not know the names of the people involved in the crash.

The driver of the motorcycle was traveling with two other motorcyclists who were not involved in the crash.

A section of Watson Pond Road was temporarily closed while first responders cleared the scene.

In addition to Rome Fire & Rescue, Belgrade Fire & Rescue, Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine State Police responded to the crash.

Maine State Police is reconstructing the accident.
