SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey went to Germany to consult with a specialist about his Achilles tendinitis.
Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that McCaffrey made the trip in hopes of resolving an issue that has bothered him since early in training camp and has forced him onto injured reserve to start the season.
“I know he’s going to see a specialist that I believe can help him with his Achilles process,” Shanahan said Monday. “I think he’s doing that over these next few days, and hopefully, it’ll help.”
McCaffrey got hurt early in training camp and missed four weeks of practice before returning to the field on a limited basis before the season opener Sept. 9 against the Jets. He was a late scratch for that game and then went on injured reserve on Sept. 14, two days after experiencing pain in the Achilles tendon following a practice.
He is eligible to return for a Week 6 game at Seattle but there is no indication that he is close to being able to play.
BRONCOS: Denver suffered a big blow with word that top tackler Alex Singleton’s season is over because of a torn ACL.
Coach Sean Payton announced the news after the team’s first practice at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, where the Broncos (1-2) are working out ahead of Sunday’s at the Meadowlands against the New York Jets (2-1).
The Broncos’ starting inside linebacker and defensive captain, Singleton was injured in the first half of Denver’s 26-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend but played all 57 defensive snaps and led the Broncos with 10 tackles.
BROWNS: Myles Garrett sat out practice to get rest and treatment for injuries on Wednesday. He wasn’t alone.
The NFL’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year was one of several Cleveland starters nursing injuries as the Browns (1-2), who have been wildly inconsistent through three games, prepared to play at Las Vegas on Sunday. Garrett is dealing with injuries to his feet, Achilles tendon and thigh. He struggled just to finish Sunday’s loss against the New York Giants, and was limping badly while leaving the stadium afterward.
Garrett sat out the team’s mid-week workout along with tackles Jack Conklin (hamstring) and Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee), running backs Jerome Ford (knee) and Pierre Strong Jr. (hamstring), linebacker Jordan Hicks (ribs, elbow) and tight end David Njoku (ankle).
BUCCANEERS: Tampa Bay’s run game and run defense could get a boost Sunday against the Eagles with offensive tackle Luke Goedeke and defensive tackle Vita Vea returning to practicing.
Goedeke remains in concussion protocol but progressed enough to practice with the team for the first time since the season-opening win against Washington on Sept. 8.
Vea practiced on a limited basis last Friday but has been out since sustaining a Grade 2 MCL sprain Sept. 15 at Detroit.
PACKERS: Quarterback Jordan Love says he is practicing with fewer limits and moving better this week as he continues to recover from a knee injury.
Whether that means Love will be ready to play Sunday in their NFC North opener against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings remains uncertain.
Love has missed two games since injuring his left medial collateral ligament in the final series of the Packers’ 34-29 season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.
CARDINALS: Defensive lineman Justin Jones is out for the season after suffering a triceps injury in Sunday’s 20-13 loss to the Detroit Lions.
The Cardinals put Jones on injured reserve and signed veteran Naquan Jones from the practice squad.
Justin Jones signed a three-year deal – which included a reported $19.8 million in guaranteed money – during the offseason and was seen as a vital piece to the team’s rebuild. The 28-year-old started the first three games of the season and had four tackles with one fumble recovery.
JETS: Right tackle Morgan Moses will be sidelined “a couple games” with a knee injury, Coach Robert Saleh announced.
The 33-year-old Moses hurt his left knee on the final play of the third quarter last Thursday night in the Jets’ 24-3 win over the New England Patriots. First-round draft pick Olu Fashanu will fill in for Moses and make his first NFL start Sunday against Denver.
