WATERVILLE — Educare Central Maine on Sept. 21 held its first annual 5K for Kids fundraising event and raised $25,000.
Nearly 70 participants of all ages signed up to walk or run and were welcomed back to the Educare campus by Waterville Fire Department’s ladder truck and showered with bubbles. Attendees explored Educare’s nature-based playground, made their own bubble wands and — despite the cool, early fall temperature — had snow cones and popcorn.

Many local businesses and individuals sponsored the event: the Bill and Joan Alfond Family Foundation, Central Maine Motors, Doug and Rita Sukeforth, Coldwell Banker Plourde Real Estate, PFG NorthCenter, Connected Credit Union, Casella Waste Systems, American Glass, Central Maine Crate, the city of Waterville and three anonymous donors.
Proceeds stay local, supporting Educare’s early care and education for young children to improve school readiness and provide support for families.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
