EAST WINTHROP – Gary Roberts Sawyer passed away Sept. 14, 2024 with his loving family at his side. Gary was born on July 24, 1945, to Ralph H. and Etta (Grange) Sawyer at Augusta General Hospital.
Gary attended Nash, Lincoln, and Buker schools, and graduated from Cony High School in 1963. In high school, he was active in many sports (football, basketball, track and tennis) and clubs and spent countless hours volunteering at the YMCA.
He then graduated from the University of Maine at Orono having majored in Sociology. While at UMO, Gary was selected into the Sophomore Owl Society and was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Gary was in charge of pledging new members and help recruit record numbers of brothers.
In 1972, Gary moved to his home on Cobbossee Lake in East Winthrop. He loved sitting on his deck watching the wildlife and enjoying the beautiful view, sounds, and weather on his deck that looked at Island Park.
Following his marriage in 1975, Gary and his wife had a daughter, Lucretia the next year. Gary and Lucretia enjoyed that special relationship that exists only for fathers and daughters. About 35 years ago, Gary raised his house onto a foundation and created a two bedroom “daylight apartment” in the new space. Since then, Gary enjoyed the company of his daughter, two granddaughters, Aubree and Julia, and most recently, great-grandson, Oliver.
Community service had been a part of Gary’s life for over 60 years. He was particularly proud of the fact that he helped start both the Pee Wee Basketball League and the Augusta Junior Football League. Gary was a member of the Capital Area Recreation Association (CARA) since 1974. His first involvement was a representative of the Augusta Junior Football and over the years served as President, Treasurer, and chaired numerous Ad Hoc and standing committees and was integral with the CARA Endowment Fund, CARA webpage, Youth Memorial Fields, John Bridge Basketball courts, and other projects up and down the Piggery Road.
He is survived by his daughter, Lucretia Clavet; granddaughters Aubree and Julia Ahearn; great-grandson, Oliver; brother Alan and wife Cindy, sister Jane and wife Gladys; and several nieces and nephews.
Gary was predeceased by his parents and brother, Richard G. Sawyer.
Gary’s visiting hours will be in the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His Funeral Service will be on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home.
