Howard “Butch” Arthur Gehrke

ANSON – Howard “Butch” Arthur Gehrke passed away on Sept. 7, 2024 and went to live with God. Howard was born in Harrisburg, Pa. on August 21, 1945, the oldest son of Howard Arthur and Bessie (Shamborough) Gehrke.

He became a tractor trailer driver at age 16, then transitioned into long-haul trucking that took him across the country numerous times. He often bragged, “Three million miles on the road and never a fender bender.”

He married the love of his life Jeanette (Ricker) Wacome on Dec. 7, 1991 and they made their home for 10 years in Shippensburg, Pa. before moving back to Maine. He started Madeline’s Flea Market in Madison, named after a beloved aunt.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years; stepchildren Kathryn Petley of Clinton, Kerry Wacome of Anson, and Kelly Emery (Bruce) of Madison; many grandchildren who loved “Pappy Gehrke”; and brother Harry Gehrke of Lincoln, NB. He was predeceased by his parents and son-in-law Gary Petley.

Howard enjoyed campouts, fireworks, flea markets, and summer potlucks at his home with family and friends. He also enjoyed entering demolition derbies, antique cars, and fishing for catfish in Georgia while watching alligators in the river. His love of being on the road continued long after retirement with trips to Pennsylvania to visit friends and wintering in Nahunta, Ga. and Zephyr Hills, Fla. He also loved his labs Blondie and Ginger.

A private burial is planned at Sunset Cemetery in North Anson. At his request, there will be no memorial services.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Giberson Funeral Home and Cremation Services. To leave a condolence for the family and to view the online obituary, please visit http://www.gibersonfuneralhome.com
