READFIELD — A Readfield History Walk is set for 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 11, at the old Smith Homestead, 96 Sturtevant Hill Road.

The farm had been established by Capt. Mathias Smith Sr. circa 1768 on a land grant. Sixty of the original 200 acres had remained in that family for six generations when the DeAngelis became owners. By that time, what had started as a small log cabin had evolved to include a three story farmhouse, carriage barn, tool shed, ice house, chicken shed, a dairy barn and a hay barn, according to a news release from Dale Potter Clark, secretary of the Readfield Historical Society.

DeAngelis and his son Tyler recently completed a 36 x 48-foot post and beam barn on the property. “It’s topped with an exact replica of the cupola that once sat atop the hay barn,” DeAngelis said. Remnants of the old cupola sit in a nearby flower garden within the remains of the former carriage barn foundation.

After viewing the farm property and new barn, those who wish to are invited to make their way, with DeAngelis as their guide, down a trail to the old cellar hole. Walking shoes and a walking stick are suggested. Attendees are welcome to bring a sandwich for a picnic in the woods. There is no fee; registration is not required.
