WINTHROP — The Winthrop Utilities District board of trustees plans to discuss a potential 16% sewer rate increase during its meeting Tuesday.
The district is set to discuss the rate jump to cover a recent sewer project, according to a Facebook post announcing the meeting.
The costs for the project exceeded the budgeted amount, according to the post, and excess costs need to be covered with a bond.
The 16% increase would be implemented over the next two years, with an 8% increase on Winthrop Utilities District customers on Jan. 1, 2025, and another 8% increase on Jan. 1, 2026.
District customers now pay $160.50 per quarter for the first 1,500 cubic feet of sewer line, plus $10.70 for each additional cubic foot.
The board also plans to discuss increasing the water service rate by 1.5% to account for inflation.
Though the district is not affiliated with the town of Winthrop, it serves as the water and sewer service provider for the community, and the Winthrop Town Council appoints the three district trustees to their positions.
Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Winthrop Utilities District office at 29 Bowdoin St.
The district also plans to hold a public hearing on the increase at 6 p.m. on Nov. 19.
