Joshua Brougham, 39, pleaded guilty in April to armed robbery. His prison term is to be followed by three years of supervised release, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine.
Brougham was also ordered to pay $1,120 in restitution.
Brougham robbed the Camden National Bank at 21 Armory St. in Augusta on Oct. 15, 2022. After he was arrested following a four-day search, Brougham confessed to the robbery, saying he needed money to support his drug habit, pay a debt and fill his SUV with gasoline, officials said.
According to officials, Brougham entered the Augusta bank at about 11:20 a.m. whle wearing a brimmed hat and a standard hospital mask over his face. A bank clerk told police after the robbery that a white man carrying a newspaper spoke with her briefly, then pulled out a small silver handgun, which he pointed at her while he told her to put “all the money in the drawer” into the newspaper.
After the clerk handed Brougham an undisclosed amount of money, Brougham folded the newspaper, walked out of the bank and drove away in a gold GMC Yukon.
Police then released an image and description of the suspect and identified him as Brougham, based on “tons” of tips from members of the community.
Police said they found an unloaded, silver Walther PPK/S .380-caliber pistol wedged into the back seat of Brougham’s SUV. The gun matched the weapon used in the bank robbery.
Officials said they also found the brimmed hat Brougham wore during the robbery.
The FBI assisted Augusta police in making the arrest.
