I’ve always known how critical nurses are to our health care system. I’m afraid that policymakers don’t understand, mistakenly believing it is doctors who are the critical part of our system.
I was reminded recently when I spent three days in MaineGeneral’s Critical Care Unit. Though I am not a fan of the hospital and its administration, I am a huge fan of its nurses!
I never had a doubt as to whether I was in good hands. My nurses combined skill and competence with high-level people skills.
We need to let healthcare administrators and policymakers know how important nurses are to high-quality care. The ratio of nurses to patients must increase. Their wages must also increase. If costs must be cut, let it be in administrative overhead.
