RUMFORD — Police have taken into custody a man who they say on Tuesday night fired shots, crashed his vehicle into a residence and set the house on fire, forcing authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order to area residents.

According to a statement issued Wednesday morning by Rumford Police Chief Tony Milligan, the man was later located by officers, suffering from a life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to Rumford Hospital and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Police have not released the name of the man.

Milligan said the incident started at about 8 p.m. Tuesday when Rumford police responded to an active shooter report at State Route 232 in Rumford Corner village, between East Bethel Road and South Rumford Road.

According to Milligan’s statement, officers “confirmed that an armed individual had fired multiple shots in the area. The suspect also crashed his vehicle into a residence at 61 State Route 232, allegedly set the house on fire, and proceeded to fire additional rounds into the residence before leaving the scene on foot.”

At about 1 a.m., Milligan said, officers located the man and he was taken to the hospital. No other individuals were injured in the incident.

Police lifted the emergency shelter-in-place order after he was found and Route 232 is now open to traffic. Investigators remain on the scene in the village actively investigating the incident.

Tuesday night, with the suspect’s whereabouts unknown, police had issued the shelter-in-place order, telling residents to lock their doors and “do not leave your house until further notice.”

At that time, Maine Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss confirmed Maine State Police was assisting Rumford police and that the tactical team was activated just before 9 p.m.

Police Wednesday said more information on the incident would be provided later in the day.
