OAKLAND — Dana Wrigley Sr. was reelected Tuesday to the Town Council, with resident Kelly Roderick winning the other seat in a three-way race.
Incumbent Laura Tracy was reelected to the Oakland-based Regional School Unit 18 board of directors in a three-way race in which she was challenged by two newcomers. Tracy serves as chair of the school board.
Wrigley, 83, a retired Central Maine Power Co. employee, was reelected to the council with 1,680 votes, and Roderick garnered 1,734 votes. They defeated political newcomer Shawn Michael Nava, 58, who got 1,284 votes.
Roderick, 60, a security guard at the Colby College Museum of Art, will fill a seat being vacated by Don Borman, who has served on the council for nearly a decade and chose not to run for reelection.
Councilors are paid $30 a meeting, of which there are about 29 per year.
“I want to thank all of my family, friends, and supporters for believing in me over the years in my efforts to represent them as a councilwoman in Oakland,” Roderick said Wednesday. “It is my hope that together we will have an informed voice on the issues ahead. The biggest battle ahead is to work on the other side of the table during budget time to ask the hard questions and get solid answers on how our tax dollars are spent.”
Roderick said she plans to first listen and then gather information and details, and work with budget and advisory members to know she is doing what citizens need. She said she hopes to make residents proud of their choice to elect her and to be their voice. She said she also wanted to congratulate Wrigley for his win and send words of encouragement to Nava to stay involved, listen and ask questions.
Wrigley was not immediately available for comment Wednesday morning.
Wrigley, who has served 18 years on the Town Council, said last month that he was running for reelection to help the town continue to grow and provide services residents need at a cost they can afford.
Roderick, who serves on the town’s Budget and Advisory Committee, said she was running to bring representation to all residents and allow their voices to be heard.
In the race for RSU 18 school board, Tracy received 1,437 votes, defeating challengers Mary Denise Ferguson, who got 666 votes, and Lori Shieve, who got 1,086.
“I am very appreciative to the voters in Oakland, and I am honored to continue to serve on the RSU 18 School Board,” Tracy said. “I am passionate about our school system and making it the very best it can be, and I will work hard for all students, teachers and staff.”
Tracy is director of primary care for MaineGeneral Medical Center.
RSU 18 enrolls students from Oakland, Sidney, Belgrade, Rome and China, and its board members earn $10 per school board meeting.
Tracy has served on the school board for nearly 24 years, about 10 as chair. She said last month that her biggest motivation in running for reelection was to continue to support all students in the district.
