AUGUSTA – Michael Joseph Gregory Coyne, Jr. passed away on Nov. 10, 2024, at the VA Togus Springs Hospice in Augusta. He was 82 years old.
Born on July 10, 1942, in Putnam, Conn. to Michael Coyne and Janice Coyne (Kolbus), Michael graduated from Killingly High School in Danielson, Conn. in 1961. He attended the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, Conn. before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1962. Michael served in the U.S. and Germany and was honorably discharged in 1965.
After marrying Rosanne Beaudreault in 1966, Michael worked as a cook at various institutions and spent 17 years as chef manager at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Waterville. After moving to Augusta, he worked full time at the Augusta Civic Center and married Marlene Reny Ouellette, who would go on to care for him until his last days. Michael retired in 2013 after 57 years in the food service industry.
Michael was a member of American Legion Post #5 in Waterville and a Charter and Life Member of AMVETS Post #2001 in Augusta. During this time, he was AMVETS Dept of Maine 3rd Vice Commander and a member of Maine Veterans Coordinating Committee.
Michael is survived by his wife, Marlene Reny Coyne of 25 years; and his children, Gregory and wife Lori, David and partner Shannon, and stepson, Mark Ouellette and wife Nicole. He is remembered by his five grandchildren, Adam and Katherine Coyne, Victoria Blaisdell, Makayla Batchelder, Kyrrah Coyne and four step-grandchildren, Luke and Mathew White, Renee and Jacob Ouellette; and three great-grandchildren, Gracelyn Sears, Josephine Quinn, and Brooklyn Batchelder.
Michael was predeceased by his son, Michael and his stepdaughter, Sheila White.
The entire family is grateful for the truly wonderful care Michael received at the VA Togus Springs in Augusta. Everyone on staff spoke very highly of him and said he constantly had them in stitches with all of his joking around.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 12 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
