BENTON — A 20-year-old Clinton man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon when his vehicle ran off the right side of Interstate 95 in Benton, officials said Monday.
Isaiah Mathieu was northbound on I-95, near mile marker 134, when he failed to negotiate a bend in the roadway and hit a guardrail, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for Maine Department of Public Safety.
State troopers responded to the crash scene at 4:17 p.m. and confirmed Mathieu had died.
The vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Trax, sustained substantial damage before entering a ditch near the tree line.
It was not known Monday why Mathieu’s small SUV had left the roadway, but speed and failure to negotiate the roadway were considered factors in the crash, officials said.
The crash remained under investigation Monday, according to Moss.
The Maine Department of Transportation, Clinton Fire Department and Blanchard’s Towing of Clinton assisted state troopers at the scene.
