GARDINER — Fire destroyed a couple’s rented Brunswick Avenue home Sunday night, killing a pet bearded dragon.
Tenants Quincy McLaughlin and Danielle Smith and their dogs made it out of 818 Brunswick Ave. unharmed, according to Fire Chief Rick Sieberg.
Sieberg said the cause of the fire appeared to be an electrical problem.
One tenant reported seeing fire coming from a wall with an electrical socket near the bearded dragon’s cage.
The fire was reported around 6 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire from the two former single mobile homes that were converted into one.
Sieberg said by the time firefighters had hooked up a hose, the fire was coming through the roof.
“It’s too bad, it was pretty fast moving,” Sieberg said. “Unfortunately, it was a complete loss.”
The property is insured and owned by McGee Properties, where McLaughlin also works.
Sieberg said the tenants were provided with a hotel room Sunday night and were working with the city and American Red Cross to find housing.
Firefighters were on the scene until about 10:30 p.m. Firefighters from Augusta, Togus, Farmingdale, Randolph, Pittston and West Gardiner responded to assist Gardiner firefighters, with Richmond firefighters covering the Gardiner fire station.
