AUGUSTA — The northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Augusta are expected to be closed completely — for up to 25 minutes at a time — during several overnight periods this week and next week, officials said.
The closures are to allow crews to install a temporary detour bridge to be used during the ongoing replacement project of the bridge that carries Western Avenue and U.S. Route 202 over the I-95, officials said.
Closures this week are expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning and Friday night into Saturday morning. Next week, closures are expected Monday night into Tuesday morning and Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Work crews are expected to close the left lane on the northbound side of I-95 at 10 p.m. each of those nights. Full closures of both northbound lanes are expected between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. The closures are to occur for periods of no longer than 25 minutes each, according to Paul Merrill, the public information officer for the Maine Department of Transportation.
All lanes of I-95 are expected to be reopened by 6 a.m. following each closure
During the full closures, traffic can use the Exit 109 ramps as a detour, Merrill said, and reenter the interstate at Exit 112.
Reed & Reed Inc. of Woolwich is the contractor for the $30 million job, which is expected to be completed in June 2026.
The project to replace the deteriorated bridge is expected to add 1,350 feet of new sidewalk along Western Avenue and Whitten Road, improving pedestrian access and safety.
