AUGUSTA — Capital Area Technical Center has announced its November Professionals of the Month.
Maeve Burgess, a junior at Monmouth Academy, is embracing the challenges and rewards of the Nursing Assistant program at Capital Area Technical Center. Burgess has found the program’s hands-on approach to be both engaging and instrumental in preparing her for clinical experiences, according to a news release from Stephanie Turgeon, Student Services coordinator.
Initially, she felt intimidated by the demands of the program, but thanks to her commitment to her studies, the encouragement of her instructor, and the support of her classmates, she has gained confidence. One of her proudest accomplishments has been mastering hospital corners and bed-making techniques. “All the hands-on labs are getting me very prepared for clinicals,” she shared, adding that the reassurance she has received has quelled her nerves and strengthened her resolve.
Her instructor, Karen Parker, praised her positive attitude and dedication. “Maeve comes to class every day with a smile on her face, excited and ready to learn about the medical field. She is taking the first steps on the nursing career ladder toward her RN degree by earning her Certified Nursing Assistant credential while in high school,” said Parker.
Outside the classroom, Burgess is a dedicated and versatile student-athlete at Monmouth Academy. She excels in golf, basketball, and track, showcasing her drive, teamwork, and commitment in both academics and athletics.
Inspired by her grandmother, who was a nurse, she aspires to follow in her footsteps. She plans to specialize in either intensive care or maternity, two areas she feels passionate about.
With her dedication to learning and her drive to succeed, Burgess is laying a strong foundation for her future in nursing, embodying the compassionate care and professionalism the field demands.
Jordyn Parise of Windsor, a junior at Erskine Academy in South Chin, is making her mark in the Law Enforcement program at CATC. Drawn to a classroom environment where students share her passion for criminal justice, she has found the program both challenging and rewarding.
One of the highlights of Parise’s experience so far has been the Mechanics of Arrest, Restraint, and Control (MARC) training. Recently, she excelled in a mock fight scenario designed to build teamwork and tactical skills. The exercise paired students in two-versus-two “fights,” with the objective of capturing towels tucked into opponents’ waistbands. When her partner was eliminated, leaving her alone against two aggressors, she rose to the challenge, successfully capturing both opponents’ towels to win the match.
“I’m learning I can do hard things,” Parise said of the experience, which tested her strength, strategy, and determination.
Her instructor, Tracey Frost, had high praise for her performance and potential. “Jordyn displays maturity beyond her years. She’s smart, dedicated, and fearless. I truly believe she will make an excellent police officer someday. She maintains the highest grade in the class and is always willing to do more,” he said.
Beyond her accomplishments in the Law Enforcement program, she is a standout student at Erskine Academy. She plays centerfield on the softball team and is an active member of the jazz band, showcasing her musical talent on the vibraphone and drums.
Looking ahead, Parise plans to return to CATC next year to deepen her knowledge and skills in the Law Enforcement program, further preparing for her future in the field.
With her determination, leadership, and diverse talents, she is well on her way to achieving her goal of a career in law enforcement.
