WINTHROP – Lawrence “Larry” J. Roy, 84, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully at his home on Nov. 13, 2024, with his loving wife Paulette by his side.
Larry was born in Augusta, the son of Alonzo and Hermance Roy. He grew up in Augusta and was a proud graduate of Cony High School. After high school, he continued his education at Central Maine Community College, and was also a member of the Air National Guard for six years. Larry spent time working as a supervisor at Bates Mill and eventually retiring from the State of Maine, but it was his entrepreneurial spirit that truly defined him. He and his beloved wife Paulette owned and operated C&S Market in Augusta for many years before selling the business and purchasing the Cobbossee Motel in East Winthrop.
Larry and Paulette’s love story began at Cobbossee Lake, where both of their families spent summers when they were children. It was at this special place that they met and eventually built a life together. Their love for the lake and all it represented was a cornerstone of their life, and Larry was happiest on a warm summer day spent with friends and family, swimming, boating, and sharing lobsters and clams.
Larry and Paulette also had a deep love for travel, especially cruising the world together and visiting many countries. They made memories all over the globe, but home was always Cobbossee Lake.
Larry is survived by his brother Lucien Roy and was a devoted husband of 63 years to Paulette, and together they raised four wonderful children, Steven Roy and his wife Heidi, Kathleen Reny and her husband Paul, Darlene Roy, and Shawn Roy. He was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Kyle Cooper, Joshua Boucher, Ryan Roy, Hallie Bennett, and Jaylie Roy; as well as a great-grandfather to Cooper Boucher.
Larry was predeceased by his parents; his sister Jacqueline Bouffard, his brothers-in-law Terence and Thomas Carey, his sister-in-law Carlene Roy; and his nieces Dianne Glidden and Debra Pomelow.
In addition to his family, Larry leaves behind a host of friends who will remember him for his kind heart, his warm laugh, and his love of life. He was a man who cherished time spent with those he loved, and his presence will be deeply missed.
A Mass will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 75 Northern Ave., Augusta. Following the service, all are invited to join the family at the Augusta Elks Club, 397 Civic Center Drive, for a gathering to share memories, stories, and photos of Larry while enjoying some light refreshments.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who brought joy and friendship into Larry’s life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Rest in peace, Larry. You will forever be in our hearts.
