A Nativity scene is displayed by the gazebo at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Fairfield. After some controversy, the display will stay in place, after the town added a sign noting it is private, and inviting people of all faiths to add their own display at the town park. In regards to the Dec. 4 article, “Nativity scene will stay in place,” I am happy to see a solution was reached surrounding the placement of a Nativity scene at a public park in Fairfield.

I would submit, however, that Rep. Shelly Rudnicki’s statement, “Our foundation in the United States is built on Christianity and the principles of Christianity” conflicts with the fact that the U.S. Constitution doesn’t mention Christianity or any specific religion. According to the First Amendment, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

That being said, Fairfield town officials would have been within their right to remove the display via the Establishment Clause, and filing charges would likely have been futile. Instead, an equitable solution was found to circumvent the conflict, and an invitation to members of all faiths to erect a display of their own was extended.

It is high time in this country that people seek to find a resolution to conflicts such as this rather than throw their weight around and expect others to comply or face charges.
