CLINTON — A Christmas Day fire destroyed a mobile home on Gustafson Road, officials said.

No one was home when the fire was reported by a neighbor around 12:52 p.m. on Wednesday, Randy Caswell, Clinton’s second assistant fire chief, said Thursday.

The Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause. The home at 114 Gustafson Road is a total loss.

Caswell said the home was fully engulfed in flames when he arrived at the scene, with the fire coming out of the windows and door.

Though it was both Christmas and the start of Hanukkah on Wednesday, around 40 to 45 firefighters arrived at the scene to help battle the blaze. Normally, he said, around 15 people respond to a fire.

“We had a very good crew … a bunch of people left the dinner table. They didn’t eat, they just jumped in their trucks and left the dinner table and went straight to the station to get in the fire trucks. We had three trucks on the road in three minutes. Being Christmas, it was amazing to see the people come out and stop their Christmas traditions to make sure the situation is taken care of,” Caswell said.

Firefighters battled the fire for about four hours, with the Clinton Fire Department calling a second alarm for additional crews.

Because Gustafson Road is outside the fire hydrant district in Clinton, Caswell said the added crews were needed to ferry water to the fire.

“We called the alarm before we left the station and multiple towns arrived. We never ran out of water. Trucks were coming and coming,” Caswell said.

Fairfield and Benton Fire Department, Skowhegan Fire Department, Winslow Fire and Rescue, Waterville Fire Department, Caanan Fire Department and Burnham Fire Department all assisted, and Oakland Fire Department conducted the Rapid Intervention Team in case any firefighters were injured. Caswell said the Rapid Intervention Team is a group of about four firefighters who do not assist with putting out the fire but are on scene for medical help.

“Every town that came to support us, they know we would help them, but we wouldn’t be able to do it without the mutual aid partners. It’s a great effort. It stinks someone lost their home, but it was a great effort on our end to get there and attempt to save some stuff. I’m proud of our department,” Caswell said.
