CAANAN — A standoff on South Sibley Road Monday morning ended in an arrest in the afternoon, officials said.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office took Edward Fowler, 62, into custody after he allegedly threatened his neighbor with a firearm, Somerset County Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell, said.

Mitchell said the neighbor reported the incident at 8:46 a.m. on Monday, and when deputies arrived at Fowler’s residence at 24 South Sibley Road, he did not answer the door.

Because Fowler was believed to own a firearm, Mitchell said, out of an abundance of caution law enforcement called the Maine State Police Tactical Team and sought a warrant to enter and search Fowler’s home, where they believed him to be.

“We secured the residence from the outside and told (Fowler) that we want to talk to him about threatening someone with a dangerous weapon,” Mitchell said.

By the time Somerset County Sheriff’s Department secured the warrant and the tactical team arrived around noon, Fowler answered the door. 

Fowler was arrested on a charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony, which is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

He was taken by law enforcement to Somerset County jail, where he is currently being held.

South Sibley Road is a private road off of Halls Bridge Road on Sibley Pond, and was shut down for several hours during the standoff.
