Clay Hipp described himself as “an old Southern boy from South Carolina,” in his editorial page piece warmly remembering Maine folk singer David Mallett (“In praise of David Mallett, a folk singer like no other,” Dec. 26). Yes, Clay, a treasure was lost when David Mallett passed away Dec. 17, 2024.
Hipp, a college lecturer for 40 years, knows how to beautify his prose. From years of enjoying Mallett music, so much so, he admitted, “he’s come to thinking that Maine is his spiritual Home.”
Judy and I, married 58 years, followed David’s performances around the state when we were within 50 miles of his doings. Her favorite: Beautiful (“… that look in your eye, all that fire inside, I’m forever loving you.”) Mine: Dark Side of the Moon, (“… if I get lost, come and find me; send a sparrow to remind me.”)
The last Mallett performance I attended was in Vienna on Oct. 14, 2023. That time saw David relaxing on stage steps after performing, verbalizing with fans, signing materials, etc. Words that warmed heart strings were exchanged. Mallett’s performance in Vienna, Oct. 20, 2024, was cancelled due to advanced health challenges.
Closing words are dealt Clay Hipp’s caring editorial page piece. For now, it is cut to fit the fridge door with a magnet. Clay’s South Carolina residency and his 40-year fulfillment of lifetime mentoring at college level mirror somewhat my doings after a South Carolina stay. During the Korean War, I joined the Marine Corps, and lived in South Carolina for a four-month boot camp residency. In later times, I represented Maine folk for 38 years in Maine’s three government branches: executive, legislative and judiciary.
Clay Hipp, your warm respect for David Mallett’s lifelong vocal riches, reflected well on you. Thank you for caring.
