TURNER — Investigators say a head-on collision Monday that injured four people — including a Monmouth police lieutenant — occurred when a vehicle coming from the opposite direction crossed the centerline on a curve.

Crash reconstructionists from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office and the Lewiston Police Department say evidence shows a vehicle driven by Sean McNeil, 41, of Minot was traveling east on Turner Center Road shortly before 5 p.m. when it “came around a curve and crossed the centerline” into the path of a vehicle driven by Dana Wessling, 52, of Turner, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

Wessling is a lieutenant for the Monmouth Police Department and was returning home at the end of his shift. In the car was his 7-year-old son, who he had just picked up from daycare.

According to the statement, Wessling had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to a nearby landing zone where he was flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The son was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital to be examined for precautionary reasons.

McNeil and a 47-year-old passenger were transported by Turner and Buckfield Rescue to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The statement said Wessling was operating his take-home cruiser, a 2022 Ford Interceptor owned by the town of Monmouth, while McNeil was operating a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Both vehicles had extensive front-end damage and are considered totaled.

No other details were provided in the statement. The crash, which occurred at the intersection with Bradford Road, is still being investigated.
