SIDNEY — A Gardiner man was killed Thursday morning in a crash on Interstate 95, near Sidney, according to police.
The driver, Philip Marson, 69, was dead when rescue workers arrived, Sidney Fire Chief Richard Jandreau said.
The crash was reported at about 7 a.m., apparently some time after a Nissan pickup truck veered into the median strip, according to Jandreau.
“It looked like the vehicle had been there for a while. It was passersby who ended up seeing it out there,” Jandreau said. “We had to pull the one victim out. It was called in as a Code K — he was deceased on scene.”
The pickup truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash, according to Jandreau, who described the scene as “horrific.”
The cause of the crash was not clear Thursday, though the Maine State Police said later in a statement that speed appeared to have been a factor.
“There were no other occupants in the vehicle. The crash is still under investigation,” Shannon Moss, the spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, wrote in the statement.
Social media posts Thursday morning reported heavy traffic for several hours in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, north of the crash.
Jandreau said rescue workers were at the scene until about 10 a.m., following about three hours of reconstruction and cleanup.
