I am a 65-year-old French Canadian. I love visiting the U.S. Since the 1930s, my family has summered or visited Maine every single year, spending thousands of dollars in Maine’s economy. And we are not alone. Thousands of Canadians travel to your beautiful state every year. We always felt welcome.
But apparently you do not need us anymore. So says your president. Well, over the next four years, we will visit Gaspésie and New Brunswick instead of Maine. The ocean is just as nice, the lobster just as good. It is four hour more driving time than going from Montreal to Kennebunk. But if Trump tries to run our economy into the ground, we will gladly drive it. And hopefully, in 2029, we will resume visiting beautiful Maine.
In the meantime, I wish you luck with Trump. Hopefully, your Constitution, which is probably the best one ever written, is strong enough to corral his imperial instincts. And hopefully Congress has enough spine to stand up to his highfalutin ideas.

We believe it’s important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
