GARDINER — A man is in custody after police say he threatened a Walgreens cashier and demanded money Thursday before leaving with cash from the register.
The robbery on Spring Street was reported shortly after 6:30 p.m., drawing Gardiner police for an extensive search of the area around the store, located near Bridge Street between Gardiner’s downtown and the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge.
Gardiner police Chief Todd Pilsbury said police recognized the suspect when they saw an image from a store security camera. After the photo was posted on Facebook, several people called with identifying information.
Pilsbury said less than $1,000 was taken.
A little less than two hours later, Gardiner police say, officers converged less than a half mile away on Winter Street and were able to locate and take the suspect into custody.
Pilsbury said no weapon was displayed and no weapon was found.
David J. Knox, 37, listed as transient, was arrested on a charge of robbery and was initially being held on $8,000 bail at the Kennebec County jail. Robbery is a Class B crime that is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
“The people who reached out were awesome,” Pilsbury said. “I hope that continues.”
The investigation is ongoing.
