AUGUSTA — A New York man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drug trafficking after Waterville police and state drug agents launched a search in Augusta and seized a large amount of cocaine and fentanyl estimated to be worth $30,000, officials said.
Andre Jones, 36, of Bronx, New York, was arrested after Waterville police and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency’s South Central District Task Force intercepted drugs being trafficked into Maine, according to Maj. Jason Longley of the Waterville Police Department.
Longley declined to disclose details of the search, including where it took place, citing “operational confidentiality issues.” He said the investigation is ongoing.
Waterville police Officer Jake Whitley learned Jones was bringing the drugs into Maine and applied for a search warrant for Jones, Longley said Monday in a statement.
Police and DEA agents coordinated an effort to apprehend Jones after he entered Maine and they located and detained him, according to Longley, who said he was found in possession of nearly 300 grams of cocaine base and nearly 30 grams of fentanyl.
Jones was charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking in Schedule W drugs (cocaine and fentanyl), and booked at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta, where his bail was set at $25,000 cash, Longley said.
A jail spokesman said Monday that Jones’ bail was listed as $50,000 cash.
