MERCER — A fire early Thursday destroyed a mobile home and displaced the man who lived there, a fire official said.

Firefighters responded just before 4 a.m. to a fully involved fire at 4 True Road, according to Chief Todd Pineo of the Norridgewock Fire Department, which serves Mercer.
At that point, the extent of the fire put firefighters in defensive operations, Pineo said. The structure was a total loss.
The home’s single occupant, Doug Perkins, and a dog were able to make it out without injury, Pineo said.
Perkins, whose family has owned the property for many years, was asleep when the fire started, Pineo said.
The cause remained under investigation around noon Thursday, but Pineo said he suspects it was started by a woodstove and is not considered suspicious.
The Red Cross was called to assist Perkins, according to Pineo.
The Skowhegan Fire Department and Smithfield Fire Department, as well as an ambulance crew, provided mutual aid. Madison firefighters covered Norridgewock’s station while crews were on scene in Mercer.
