Susan Collins kowtows to Donald Trump with every vote she takes. And, yes, I know she voted against one or two of his unqualified, dangerous cabinet appointees but only when she knew her vote would be a safe one and the nominee had enough votes to win without hers. She even voted to give up her power as the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee to Russ Vought who believes he, not Congress, has the power to approve and disapprove what gets funded. Incredible.
Janet Mills, on the other hand, stood her ground when face to face with the bully and felon-in-chief as he threatened federal funding for Maine. She suggested that she would rely on state and federal law rather than his pronouncements as “king,” which is how he recently referred to himself.
Margaret Chase Smith’s name is often invoked when discussions of politicians’ profiles in courage arise. She was a friend of both the Collins’ and the Mills’ families. Not much question which one of the members of those families has her rolling over in her grave.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
