SKOWHEGAN — A student brought an unloaded pellet gun on a bus in the Skowhegan-area school district on Monday, Superintendent Jon Moody said in a letter to parents.
An investigation by the school resource officer found that the pellet gun was not loaded, nor was it brought into the school.
“The pellet gun was shown to a very small group of students and discarded on the bus before students exited,” Moody said in the letter, adding that no students were in danger at any point.
Moody did not release any more information on the student, including their grade, the bus they were on, or the school they attend.
Moody said he can’t comment on specific student situations and would not want a student to be identified when it was not a dangerous incident.
“I will say that it is not uncommon for an elementary student, over a weekend, to accidently bring something into school that they wouldn’t otherwise have had because of a sleepover, weekend event, trip, etc.,” Moody said in an email.
Maine School Administrative District 54 includes the towns of Canaan, Cornville, Mercer, Norridgewock, Skowhegan and Smithfield. It has five elementary schools, plus Skowhegan Area Middle School and Skowhegan Area High School.
