PORTLAND — For its 100th anniversary season, the Portland Symphony Orchestra is presenting a series of “pay-what-you-can” chamber concerts.
On Tuesday to Thursday, March 25-27, classical music fans, and those curious about classical music, can attend an intimate concert in Lewiston, Waterville or Portland. On Sunday, March 30, the full orchestra returns to Merrill Auditorium for a matinee concert featuring the music of Mozart and klezmer music. All the March concerts feature guest clarinetist and composer David Krakauer.
The Chamber Series:
Tuesday, March 25, 7 p.m., Olin Arts Center at Bates College, 75 , Lewiston
Wednesday, March 26, 7 p.m., Waterville Opera House, 1 Common St., Waterville
Thursday, March 27, 7 p.m., Maine Jewish Museum, 267 Congress St., Portland
Krakauer has been praised for his ability to move between the worlds of classical and klezmer music. He joins a string quartet of musicians from the orchestra for a concert featuring original works by Krakauer, alongside selections from Mozart and Brahms. These concerts are part of the PSO’s new Chamber Music series. Tickets are available at porttixcom.
Mozart meets klezmer
Sunday, March 30, 2:30 p.m., Merrill Auditorium
A rich and ancient tradition, klezmer has endured due to its deep humanity of expression and easy absorption of contemporary influences. The melding of classical and klezmer music has been going on for hundreds of years, with harmonies, melodies and performers moving freely from genre to genre.
