WINSLOW — The double-wide mobile home at 271 S. Reynolds Road in Winslow was left uninhabitable Saturday evening after fire fanned by strong winds tore through the dwelling, officials said.
The home’s two residents are reportedly living elsewhere following the blaze that killed their two cats.
Michael Murphy, the deputy fire chief of the Winslow Fire Department, said Monday the homeowners reported the fire at 6:19 p.m.
The fire was caused by an electrical panel in one of the back bedrooms, officials said. When the bedroom’s window popped out, wind came rushing in, fueling the flames, according to Murphy.
“It was very wind-driven,” Murphy said. “As soon as the window popped out, it just kind of blowtorched the whole house.”
Firefighters had the flames extinguished by about 8:30 p.m., Murphy said.
Winslow property records show Craig and Debra Stetson own the property, which is valued at $189,500 for taxation purposes.
The Stetsons, who were home when the fire began, were not injured, Murphy said.
As of 6 p.m. Saturday, the wind was gusting at up to 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Such winds could cause fire to spread in the right conditions, said Jerry Combes, a meteorologist with the NWS office in Gray.
“(The wind) could help it spread easily, if it’s dry,” Combes said.
Murphy said an insurance adjuster was at the home Monday, and the homeowners had a place to stay.
“I know they were talking with their insurance company, because they were offering a place,” Murphy said. “I don’t know where they’re staying, but they said they were all set when we asked.”
Along with Winslow firefighters, crews from Fairfield, Vassalboro and Waterville responded to the blaze.
The Oakland Fire Department served as a rapid intervention team, which provides assistance or care for firefighters, if the need arises, and a crew from Clinton covered the fire station in Winslow.
