I’m writing this because I’m tired of watching how the state of Maine has neglected its homeless people.
I run a small organization that has called upon our governor, our local and state representatives and have gotten nowhere.
I have attended meetings in Portland where city officials were there, not listening. I attended a meeting in Portland at a city park. My organization got a nice interview. We were told to be quiet. There was a homeless guy sleeping on the ground during the meeting. Did anyone help him?
There are organizations out here trying to help. We keep running into closed doors. No one who is in a position to do something cares to help. People have died on our streets. They die needlessly. Wanna help somebody? It’s as simple as giving what we can. It’s a simple as picking up a young guy and getting him medical attention. It’s just going out of our way to help our neighbor.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
