WATERVILLE — A local man was arrested early Thursday after investigators determined he intentionally set a fire to a dumpster and trash, officials said.

Around 2:30 a.m., Waterville fire-rescue responders were going to another call when they saw a fire next to a dumpster near 44 College Ave., the Office of State Marshal said in a statement.

The Waterville police and fire departments responded to the address, which is a Burger King restaurant, and found Jason Woods, 47, of Waterville “laying on the ground with a bunch of debris on fire around him.”

The fire marshal’s office said that police officers pulled the burning items away from Woods to prevent him from burning himself. The dumpster sustained minor damage.

Investigators determined the fire was intentional, and Woods was charged with arson and taken to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta.

Arson is a Class A offense in Maine, no matter what the value of the property involved. In Maine, Class A crimes are punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
