A 22-year-old woman has been charged with stealing thousands of dollars while employed at a Fairfield truck stop, according to court records and police.
Izabella Hartsfield of Fairfield was indicted on one Class B count of theft by unauthorized taking, court records show.
The indictment alleges Hartsfield took more than $10,000 cash from the Irving and Circle K truck stop on or about Aug. 31, 2024.
A Somerset County grand jury returned the indictment when it met in April, court records show.
An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates enough evidence exists for a case to move forward to trial. As of Friday, Hartsfield had not yet entered a plea, according to court records.
Her court-appointed attorney, Angela Jensen, did not respond to a voicemail and an email on Monday.
Fairfield police Officer Casey Dugas, department spokesperson, said Hartsfield is a former employee of the truck stop, located at 204 Center Road, off Exit 132 of Interstate 95.
Police believe she took the money while she was working there, Dugas said.
Police began investigating after receiving a complaint last year from truck stop management, Dugas said.
Dugas declined to specify the exact amount police believe Hartsfield took. The value of “more than $10,000” listed in the indictment is the definition in state statute for a Class B theft charge, which is the highest class for theft.
The Fairfield Police Department has finished its investigation, and the case has been turned over to the Somerset County district attorney’s office for prosecution, Dugas said.
He declined to release other details about the investigation, saying that the case is still pending in court.
Hartsfield signed a summons for the theft charge on Nov. 14, 2024, according to court records on file in Skowhegan. Prosecutors filed an initial complaint later that month, before taking the case to the grand jury in April.
A manager at the truck stop Monday said employees are not authorized to discuss any topic with the press.
A telephone call to Circle K’s Great Lakes Division in Akron, Ohio, was not returned Monday. That regional office covers Circle K locations in Maine, according to the company’s website. A customer service representative who answered Circle K’s main phone line Monday said he had no contact information available for the company’s media relations staff.
