Several fire departments and law enforcement agencies are responding Friday to an explosion at a Searsmont sawmill that officials say injured multiple firefighters, according to officials.
Emergency crews from across the state are responding to Robbins Lumber at 506 Main St. S., where a large plume of black smoke is visible from miles away. Multiple firefighters were injured in an explosion at the sawmill, according to a social media post from the West Forks Volunteer Fire Department.
One of the owners of the mill, Catherine Robbins-Halsted, told reporters in Searsmont that all employees are accounted for and declined to share further details about the fire.
“Buildings can be replaced, employees cannot,” Robbins-Halsted said.
According to the Midcoast Villager, people on scene have reported that a silo filled with wood shavings exploded after 11 a.m., leaving multiple people with injuries. Local authorities have not confirmed any information about the fire.
Authorities blocked off nearby roads while crews fight the flames, and state officials are urging people to stay away from the scene.
Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office and rangers from the Maine Forest Service are responding to the sawmill, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss said. She declined to release more information until investigators arrive at the scene.
Videos shared with the Portland Press Herald show helicopters hovering over the smoldering saw mill. Flight radar information indicates that the helicopters are owned by LifeFlight of Maine.
About 2 1/2miles from the sawmill, fire trucks are filling up at Bartlett Stream. Mike Drinkwater, a firefighter in Prospect, told a reporter that first responders are concerned about exceeding use of the water sources available at the scene.
Tiffany Mannarini, who lives in Appleton, posted videos to social media showing a large plume of smoke rising from the area. She said in a Facebook message that she saw ash falling from the sky on parts of Appleton Ridge, where several people were parked watching the fire.
Gov. Janet Mills released a statement about “the situation unfolding in Searsmont,” urging residents to stay clear of the area and follow law enforcement instructions.
“I ask Maine people to join me in keeping all those affected in their thoughts,” she said in the statement.
