SKOWHEGAN — A sidewalk improvement project on Norridgewock Avenue began last week and is expected to continue through late summer, transportation officials said.

An approximately 1/3-mile stretch of the road, from the Margaret Chase Smith Library to Coburn Avenue, is set to get new sidewalks, accessibility upgrades, drainage improvements and water utility work, the Maine Department of Transportation said in an announcement Monday.

Drivers should expect a single lane of alternating traffic during construction, Maine DOT said.

The town of Skowhegan said in a separate announcement on its website that the initial lane closure is expected to be in effect daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 12.  Updated traffic changes will be shared as the project continues, the town announcement said.

Ranger Construction Corp. of Fairfield was awarded the $1.1 million contract for the project, according to Maine DOT.
