AUGUSTA — The Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Annual Observance was held Tuesday at the Maine State House with Gov. Janet Mills delivering the keynote remarks.
The granite memorial, located at 230 State St., is dedicated to Maine law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty since the 1800s.
This year, the names Richard A. Betters and Herbert G. Tarbox will be inscribed on the memorial wall, bringing the total number of honored officers to 90.
Betters, with the Portland Police Department, died Jan. 14, 2009, after suffering a heart attack shortly after entering a burning building and helping evacuate residents while working his shift.
Tarbox, with the Falmouth Police Department, died April 19, 1959, after suffering a heart attack while administering first aid to an individual who had collapsed.
