Peter L. Bailey

HALLOWELL – Peter L. Bailey, 83, of 11 Stickney Terrace, died Aug. 3, 2025, at Togus Springs Hospice and Care Unit.

Peter was born in Portland on Oct. 9, 1941, the son of Linwood “Pete” E. and Myrtle Smith Bailey. He attended Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, California and graduated from Deering High School in Portland, Maine in 1959. He served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist on the USS Vulcan. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he attended and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston, as a mechanical designer in 1964.

Peter has been employed by the Atomic Energy Commission in Illinois; Keyes Fibre Co. in Waterville as a designer; a machinist for Cooper-Weymouth-Peterson in Clinton; and as Engineering Manager at W.S. Enterprises, Inc. in Coopers Mills. From 1982 to 2005 he had been a design engineer for Mid-State Machine Products in Winslow. After retiring, he had a home-based business, designing fixtures for machine shops in New England. From 2011 to 2013, he worked as a design engineer at Machining Innovations in Oakland.

Peter enjoyed traveling, his 1969 classic Corvette, car races, particularly drag racing and classic cars. He was a long-time member of the NHRA. He owned and raced his own dragster “Night Moves” with his partner, Tim Weston in the 70’s and 80’s.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Sharon Hayes of Tucson, Ariz., and his daughter Jennifer K. Bailey of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Peter is survived by his wife Margaret “Peg” Doyle-Bailey of Hallowell; son Jason W. Bailey and wife, Lynn, of Waterville; stepdaughter Alyson Weymouth Condict and husband, Robert, of Concord, New Hampshire; he was “Grampa Pete” to Connor and Kevin Condict, of Concord, New Hampshire; the mother of his children, Gail Bailey of Waterville; “The Super Bowl Gang” (they haven’t watched a game in 15 years but still had a wonderful time), his good friend and fellow hooligan, Frederick Stevens; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Peter was a quiet and gentle man with a great sense of humor and wit. He enjoyed his family, friends, his “Vette,” yearly trips to Aruba with good friends and of course, trips to the casinos.

Peter’s family wishes to thank Dr. Neil Majithia and his staff at the Alfond Cancer Center, Dr. Robert Dohner and staff of the Palliative and Hospice Care of MaineGeneral Medical Center, and the wonderful staff at Togus Springs for their caring and kindness during Pete’s illness. A special thank you is extended to his brothers-in-law, Joe and Bill Colfer, for all their help and support.

Per Peter’s request, funeral services will be private.
