Severe thunderstorms blew through parts of Maine Saturday, downing trees in some areas and knocking out power to almost 1,900 Central Maine Power Co. customers.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Maine starting Saturday afternoon and lasting until 8 p.m. in areas of Cumberland, York, Androscoggin, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Somerset, Franklin and Oxford counties.
A strong cold front moved through the region, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms, that could include damaging wind, large hail and torrential rain. Heavy downpours could lead to flooding in some areas, the weather service said.
Residents were encouraged to go indoors as the storms passed through, seeking shelter in a sturdy building and away from windows.
