Scarborough’s season-opening win over two-time defending Class A champion Gorham has earned the Red Storm the top ranking in the first Varsity Maine volleyball poll of the 2025 season. Scarborough swept the Rams 3-0 on Thursday.

Early-season losses by expected state title contenders made for a wacky first poll.

Defending Class B champion Washington Academy and Bonny Eagle tied for the most first-place votes (three) and are ranked second and third, respectively. No. 4 York, last year’s Class B runner-up, beat 2024 Class A runner-up Biddeford, leaving the Tigers without a spot in the poll. Don’t expect them to be absent for long.

The Varsity Maine volleyball poll is based on games played before Sept. 9, 2025. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.

VOLLEYBALL
1. Scarborough (1) 33
2. Washington Academy (3) 23
3. Bonny Eagle (3) 19
4. York (1) 16
5. Camden Hills 9
